When that didn't work, they brought him to rescuers and left him with them. He was not bearing weight on his right front leg and he was clearly in pain. Thankfully, rescuers were able to get Hershy into the vet within 24 hours but there, they discovered even worse news. With being sedated so that all his painful matts could be removed, the skin of his right leg just sloughed off and a wound there, so deep and infected, started to drain copious amounts of pus. X-rays revealed that the infection had gone so long without care that it had actually reached his bone - and the bone, as a result, was starting to erode. X-rays also revealed that Hershy had untreated fractures of the right front wrist area. Due to the damage to the bone and level of infection, amputation was recommended. It was the only way to save his life.
Rescuers desperately need to raise funds to pay for Hershy's treatment and save his life. In the meantime, he's been placed on medications for infection and pain and is getting daily dressing changes done while he waits for the surgery date. We will keep all updated, but please donate if you're able. Any and all kinds are appreciated.

After neglecting him for years, it should have come to no surprise to Hershy's owners that he would become sick. But when his body began to wreak of infection and he started acting extremely lethargic, his owners acted as though they never would have expected him to become ill and to handle the infections, matting, and skin breakage on his skin, they decided that they would dunk him in bleach water to help rid him of his smell.
